Facts for Women:

Female Pattern Baldness?

Actually, hair loss in women is much more common than we are led to believe. It can be caused by a variety of factors, such as hormonal imbalances and vitamin deficiencies. But these are often temporary conditions. The permanent hair loss most women experience is due to the same cause as male pattern baldness: an inability to properly break down the hormone testosterone when present in the scalp. Yes, women's bodies do manufacture a small amount of testosterone.

Drugs and Chemicals

You may have heard about the hypertension drug, Minoxidil, being used to treat male pattern baldness. It is now being marketed as a possible treatment for female pattern baldness as well. Unfortunately, the results for Minoxidil in treating women have proven as disappointing as its success rate in treating men: only slightly more than 1/3 of all test subjects report any results at all. The hair growth, if it does occur, is rarely cosmetically significant. Any hair produced is generally very fine and grows to around only 1/2" in length, and is limited only to the crown area.

The Only Solution to Thinning Hair is More Hair

A little peach fuzz on the top of your crown area will no more solve your hair loss problem than teasing your remaining hair to cover your thinning areas. The only way to have the appearance of more hair is to have more hair, period. Anybody who tries to tell you anything else is at best misguided and at worst dishonest.
